Cosmética y belleza
I'm a feminist sociologist writer and blogger. My passion is research and writing about body image, eating disorders, the fashion industry, and women's issues in general. My blog, Mirror, Mirror, OFF the Wall documents a personal experiment in body image and self esteem: 6 months before my wedding, I decided to stop looking in the mirror... for a year. The blog is like me: quirky, nerdy, funny, feminist, and smart. Oh, and I love fashion and beauty (I used to work in the fashion industry) so going without mirrors is a real challenge. If I could pick a muse, it would be Miss Piggy (though I like to call her MS. Piggy!). I am currently a starving graduate student, but I was recently offered a (modest) book deal based on my blog project. I desperately want to revamp the look and functionality of my blog (www.ayearwithoutmirrors.com) AND my personal website (www.kjerstingruys.com). They need to maintain separate URLs, and slightly different tones, but should feel relatively seamless when readers click through from one to the other.

My current personal webpage: www.kjerstingruys.com This is clearly an amateur web design, but it serves it's purpose. I'd like it to look more professional, less sterile, but still a tiny bit quirky. Also, I created this page before I started my blog, and my new personal webpage needs to represent an academic AND a blogger/author. For personal webpage: www.juliapowellbooks.com I LOVE this website. The homepage inspired me to want a separate homepage on my own website even though I can't really afford it... :P Much like the homepage of www.juliepowellbooks.com I would like to have a personal homepage that has a symbolic and representative image plus links to the following content pages: BIO, BLOG, RESEARCH, WRITING, RESOURCES, PRESS, and CONTACT. I also like the way this website mixes bright colors with neutrals. IN the content pages, it's also cool that each page has it's own symbol in the header. www.sarahhoffmanwriter.com Much less creative, but very professional and clean. Content-focused, minimalist. I also like the big, colorful widgets (though I might not like them as much if the rest of the website were busy and colorful, and I might not like the plain website as much without the big colorful widgets! it's all about balance, no?) for Blog: my current blog: www. ayearwithoutmirrrors.com I don't know exactly what I want my blog to look like, but I can tell you what I don't like about my current page: 1) I think the colors are too intense and not lighthearted enough. 2) The background is supposed to be a broken mirror, but it kind of looks like scary broken glass. 3) The font(s) are so boring! 4) Nothing looks home-made, quirky, or vintagey... it's all computery, boxy, and sterile. There's no texture or richness, just color and sharp lines... Here are some blog pages that I like, and what I like about them: http://noimpactman.typepad.com/ I like the cartooned header, and the use of color (mix of tonal greens in pastel and also brights). It's very readable, and your focus goes from the header to the text, without too many distractions from the background. I DON'T want a distracting background. http://www.thevelvetdoll.com/ Even though this is a super feminine beauty-site, I like the simplicity, readability, and mixture of fonts used in header and post titles. I LOVE the handwriting font used for post titles. It looks like colored pencil to me. If only my handwriting were that legible... The 2-column design makes the content of this blog very easy to focus on. Again, plain background is nice. http://www.andthenshesaved.com/ With this blog, I like how the design colors manages to be feminine without being super-girly. I also (again) like the use of handwriting fonts, and combining of neutrals with brights. THat said, this blog is really busy in terms of content and columns, and I would want my blog to be more simple.

My personal website needs to convey professionalism, as I am an academic (very serious) in addition to a blogger (more personal and quirky). Even though my research and writing topics deal with women and beauty, my website can't be super-feminine. No overt pink&purple, no barbie-ish anything. I do like mixing bright colors with more neutral colors. I would also consider plain white backgrounds to convey simplicity and professionalism, provided that other design elements are inspiring. Homepage of Personal Website Much like the homepage of www.juliepowellbooks.com I would like to have a personal homepage that has a symbolic and representative image plus links to the following content pages: BIO, BLOG, RESEARCH, WRITING, RESOURCES, PRESS, and CONTACT. Content pages of Personal Website The content pages of my personal website should have a Header, Horizontal Navbar (unique buttons would be nice), and a 2-column template. (again, www.juliepowellbooks.com is a great model for this!) Another example of a homepage I like is http://www.sarahhoffmanwriter.com In contrast to www.juliepowellbooks.com, this site is less creative and more professional, but I like the minimalism and the big colorful widgets My BLOG page needs to be more colorful and playful and quirky than my personal website, but still smart and intellectual-ish. The spirit is feminist, feisty, and fashionable. I currently use Blogger and would love to stay in that format, but I can also move to wordpress if needed. I don't know exactly what I want my blog to look like, but I can tell you what I don't like about my current page: 1) I think the colors are too intense and not lighthearted enough. I'm including two files that show quotes from "miss piggy" - although I definitely can't have a "miss piggy" themed blog or webpage, these quotes are of the same spirit as my work!
I HATE stock photos, and I LOVE websites that incorporate hand-drawn design elements. My advice is to FIRST develop a creative concept for my blog page, and then take some elements from it to carry over into the personal website. my target audience for my blog and book are women from 15 to 55. Like me, they are interested in beauty, style and femininity, but feel angst about the insanity of our culture's beauty standards. A lot of people are particularly interested in the "wedding" angle of my blog project, but I don't want to over-emphasize this too much. It's NOT a wedding blog. Some elements about wedding stuff might be okay, but it can't be the main focus. It's a funny mix... some of my readers are power-feminists and academics, and others are super-feminine wedding freaks. Best to not offend either group! As for values... it's got to be a body positive message. Also, if you are temped to make me into a cartoon, please don't make me barbie-like. I'm a tiny bit chubby, with straight blonde hair, brown eyes, and glasses. :)
