While a house is defined as a physical structure or dwelling, the word home encompasses a feeling of place, refuge, and comfort that extends beyond brick and mortar. The mission of the Healing Home Fund is to provide resources for individuals and families to recreate a sense of home while their loved one is cared for at George Washington University Hospital.
When the Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) in my brain unexpectedly ruptured in June 2017, my parents were fortunate to purchase last minute flights from Atlanta to DC without pause to be at my bedside. Throughout my ten-day stay on the ICU at George Washington University Hospital, my family drove back to my husband, Shaun and my house in Bethesda for warm meals, hot showers and comfortable beds. For countless others, this story is not a reality. When a loved one is in the hospital, he or she is attended to by nurses, doctors, techs, nutritionists, and the list goes on. In the wake of the turmoil, where do the family members find support?
That’s where you and I can band together to help. The Healing Home Fund will provide a financial reserve for individuals and families who need assistance with food, hotel stay, airfare, gas cards or any other resource the social worker on the unit identifies. Please join me in generously giving to those who need peace and comfort in the midst of such an uncertain time.
