BBQ - http://bbq.io/
I like websites and logos that speak to me. I like little stories and details that make me smile. I like to be emotionally engaged. I like Apple's aesthetic. I like Twitter's aesthetic. I like tongue-in-cheek that isn't cheesy. I have no need to look serious. I don't like flashy. I don't need to try hard to impress. I have a good product, I'm looking for an aesthetic and overarching logo/theme to tell its story.
BBQ is an information filter.
Think of reading the newspaper in the morning while drinking a cup of tea in the sun. These are your personalized news. They find you. They percolate through the world just for you. Don't sell it as newspaper - this is about the future.
Think about a sieve, a filter, a BBQ that is a sieve, the earth as a filter, all kinds of filters and growth and spreading and organic networks. Think about ideas percolating through a substrate that is people. Ideas spreading through society and finding you. BBQ is discovery.
BBQ is growth. BBQ makes the world better by getting the right information to the right people. It's life. It's happy. It isn't sterile, but it's refreshingly pure. BBQ is a neural network with the humans being the neurons, and information flowing through them. Algorithmically it's a graph, but no one needs to know. I want to reach people emotionally - they don't need to understand how it works. Don't focus on people - this isn't social at all. BBQ is all about content finding you - articles, news, everything with an URL.
Think about the filter. Make it emotionally satisfying.
You can make it fun. but don't make it funny - BBQ is the way information finds you, make it definite and lasting. Treat it like the lasting well-know brand that it will be. That's what it is. Information finds you.
I want an iconic/symbolic logo that ideally provides room to play with as a repeating element or theme throughout the website (not a neccessity). I'd not reject a great combination mark either.
While I'd prefer designs that can stand on their own, I'd also like to see a version of your logo with the letters BBQ and possibly the claim "Information finds you".
You'll have to demonstrate that your idea, basic logo and colorscheme are strong and versatile enough to serve as the basis of a brand, a website, and to later be repurposed for iphone app logos, favicons, print, tshirts, ...
I don't need all of that done right now, mind you. Initially I'll just want to take the logo and put it on a website, and then start to develop a website design from there. Please mention if you will be able to help with the website design as well! (JFYI: the website with the most similar UI is probably twitter)
Think about a design that isn't heavy nor generic. Play with the filter and the relief people will feel when they stop drowning in information. Don't get too hung up on the name. This isn't about the name, this is about emotion. And freedom. And making us happier.
Don't try to recycle something that doesn't fit. I'm not interested in something generic. I can increase the prize money if what you're doing is a lot of work, but don't give me junk.
