Social Media from Scratch
I love the creative process and beautiful design.
My background is 26 years of marketing, big agency advertising, market research, brand management and small business consulting. I have been working on a social media training product called Social Media from Scratch since September 2009.
I'm partnering with a social media expert who has developed a proven system that helps small businesses drive more qualified leads to their websites. We're passionate about helping small businesses grow. We love our clients and want them to do well.
We're results-oriented entrepreneurs, just like our clients. We like to have fun in what we do, at the same time, we do work hard.
I've personally spent full time since August 2009, learning online marketing, how to create an info product and how to do an Internet launch. I am also going to feature a survey on a website to get the best language for positioning the product.
The target audience is male and female small business owners who have a website, in the age range from 35 to 54. Their business is their life. It is more than a way to make money, it's a huge part of who they are.
Their business gets them up in the morning and keeps them up at night. Especially in this economy. They have a strong sense of family, but honestly, sometimes their business keeps them away from their families. They are looking for ways to make doing business easier. They probably think that social media would work for their business, but are overwhelmed by the idea of using it. They need a simple system.
They like that it is virtually free and think it would give their businesses a positive buzz with their customers. They also are "early adopters" who use the Internet daily and are always looking for new ways to build their businesses. They want to be seen as experts in their industry and trendsetters among their friends and colleagues.
They may have tried learning social media themselves, but haven't kept up with it because they think it takes too much time. They need our system because it works. With it, they will have the option of using Virtual Assistants who can do a large amount of the routine social media tasks for them. Owners would need to spend about an hour a week developing content or do it themselves (w/out a VA) for an hour a day.

Since 99% of my business will be in the US, the globe has to feature North America front and center. We Americans can only recognize a globe from that perspective. ;-)
Also, not all designs have to feature the globe. If you want to go with something else that represents SOCIAL MEDIA, that would be great. Thanks for all you hard work. Jane P.S. If you want to get a message to me, please use the private email, because sometimes I can miss messages left in the Comments Section. Thanks.

I am seeing few icons I like that communicate "Social Media." One that I do like is the globe because it communicates that social media is worldwide. I am interested in seeing some version of the globe incorporated. Thanks.

If you can come up with a sophisticated three-color-plus-black design, I would like to see it. The two color plus black seems a little lacking. Just keep the colors muted and professional. Thanks. Jane
NEW INFORMATION, 3/25/10 9 PM CST, USA:
I closed this contest yesterday and got feedback from several small business owners that the multi-colored logos do not convey the level of professionalism, sophistication and tone appropriate for a business product.
Therefore, I am now defining some new requirements for the logo as well as listing the requirements that are relevant from the original concept:
Tone: sophisticated, upscale but not too formal. Note: The training product will sell for $497, with four coaching sessions per month that sell for $97 per month, ongoing.
Type: Must convey a contemporary attitude; can be two colors plus black
Emphasis: "Social" and "Media" need to be given equal weight
Overall: The whole design should be clearly readable.
Icon or graphic: The design should contain a subtle icon or graphic treatment that communicates the idea of "social Media."
- Needs to be a logo for "Social Media from Scratch" not just initials "SMfS" or "SMS"
- Appeals to men and women
- - Is approachable
- Is clean and clearly readable
- Is modern but not futuristic
- Will work for the web, print and business cards
- Don't use the color pink, orange or green
- Contains some sort of graphic element or icon that helps communicate the idea of Social Media from Scratch. This element needs to be appealing from a design standpoint and not detract from the name. I don't want anything "horsey" or awkward looking.
Specific design request: If someone can figure out a way to use this in a sophisticated logo, I'm interested: SOC!AL MED!A. (Using ! instead of I.)
What I do NOT want:
The Social Media Examiner logo is the exact OPPOSITE of what I'm looking for. I can NOT stand this design. It looks childish, has way too much going on in it and the jungle/explorer theme is dated. The whole this is just really bad.
The logo will serve as the design foundation for all future efforts: web, print and business cards.
A few of the designs from the original contest still earned 5 stars because they got positive feedback, despite that fact that they are mulit-color.
