We are a group of parents who are working together to found a highly environmentally and socially conscious child-inspired learning community, which will include a school, (eventually for toddlers (a parented program) through high school), many opportunities for family participation, synergistic relationships between our community and businesses, and a strong support network for our parents and teachers to also pursue their own interests. Our school program will follow the Montessori philosophy, and our goal is to support children in finding their places as conscious, empowered citizens of the world.
We will involve seniors in our program, create a family/baby/teen friendly community space in our buildings, and have a full-time outdoor supervisor so that any child can be outdoors at any time. Children will have opportunities to garden, indoors and out, year-round (we are in Calgary, Canada, so this will require a greenhouse or atrium).
We have chosen the name Common Ground for a number of reasons. It refers to the collaborative nature of our project, which will include consensus-based decision making at the board level and throughout, including amongst the children. It refers to the Earth, in a gardening kind of way, as well as in a "we ALL live here" kind of way. It feels a bit like a coffee shop, which implies the community is also for parents and adults.
