Tap Out: A combat sports term for yielding to the opponent, and hence resulting in an immediate defeat.
Tap Out Cancer is a non-profit organization with unique branding needs. Our mission is to empower the jiu jitsu and grappling communities to raise money for cancer research. The funds raised go directly to organizations like the American Cancer Society, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and others like it.
Because the brand will be aligned with the jiu jitsu community, which is very closely related to mixed martial arts, the brand will need to walk a tight rope of contradictions. However, jiu jitsu and grappling are NOT the same as MMA. There is no striking, so using visuals like punches, kicks, or gloves won't make sense.
The branding will need to be tough to fit in with jiu jitsu and grappling communities, but sensitive enough to represent a non-profit. Some other adjectives to describe the brand are strong, determined, honorable, united, and proud.
The branding will need to be modern, since our company will be very much web-based with a social fundraising element, yet not so Web 2.0 that it would look strange to see someone grappling in a t-shirt or shorts featuring the logo.
The branding needs to represent a charity but include elements that represent the jiu jitsu and grappling communities that community members can relate to. Some ideas might be the jiu jitsu belt or figures actually grappling. I don’t want it to digress to a grungy style that many MMA brands seem to adopt. We need to represent a company that other corporations will feel comfortable partnering with.
The branding should establish us as a legitimate MMA/Grappling brand that reflects the hard work, sweat, blood and tears that go into training. It should represent that same struggle to find a cure for cancer, and how supporting Tap Out Cancer will accomplish this on behalf of our community.
It’s not necessary, but I’d like to have both an icon (abstract/pictoral mark) as well as a type treatment within the logo. The icon could be adjacent to the type treatment or used within the type. Let your imagination go.
The branding will need to be able to work across various mediums, but particularly online and on apparel and merchandise. Many of the donations will be in the form of apparel, merchandise and equipment sales for use in grappling, like t-shirts, shorts, rash guards, gi patches, bags and typical business uses.
I’m partial to the color red, especially since a red belt is the highest honor in jiu jitsu and no effort less than that will cure cancer. This is not required though. I’m open to other color schemes.
This is not to be confused with the MMA apparel brand "TapouT". We are in no way affiliated with them and don't want our branding to bear any resemblance to theirs.
Note that Tap Out is two words.
