The only mandatory element is that the logo must feature a beaver.
Here is a list of ideas and pointers, please feel free to use none, any or all of them. I trust your judgement on what looks good:
I had an idea where the body of the beaver would be the "B" of "Beaver Labs", and its tail would be the L of "Beaver Labs", with "Beaver" written above "Labs". I can't draw to save my life so I can't show you. Feel free to try that or go with your own idea.
The beaver is a meaningful animal in computer science:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busy_Beaver_game To put it shortly the Busy Beaver number is a number so high we can't even compute it. Finding a lower bound is an open problem in computer science.
The busy beaver problem is defined by a Turing Machine, so feel free to incorporate (or not, your choice) the constitutive elements of a Turing Machine in your design: an infinite roll of paper divided in cells, a writing implement to mark the cells, and a finite number of states for the machine to be in.
Our inspiration for our research comes from Bell Labs, and more specifically Plan 9 whose mascot, Glenda, was designed by Renée French https://9p.io/plan9/glenda.html please feel free to draw inspiration from her style (She also did the Go Gopher https://blog.golang.org/gopher).
Then, here is a list of vague directions I would like your designs to follow:
- We work exclusively with open source so any font you use must be open source. Feel free to use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_Modern as a reminder of our academic background (this font is ubiquitous in the scientific literature) but you can choose other fonts if you want.
- I would like the logo to be simple enough to be easy to reasonably approximate with XY plotter or a laser engraver, or a bandsaw on sheet metal,or by hand. Glenda, the Plan9 bunny is a good example. Feel free to ignore that if the added complexity makes your design look good.
- I would like the logo to be timeless. I think minimalism is the way to go (like the flat Apple logo, rainbow or monochrome) to avoid a decade feel that would fade within a few years. For example try to avoid the hipster designs that try too hard to look old but that are now seen everywhere and look superficial and generic instead.
- We are huge fans of the UNIX philosophy and the associated lore, please feel free to draw inspiration from the following terms: Wizard, Magic, Pipe, Shell, Root, Wheel, Thread, Kernel.
Thanks in advance :)
