Modern digital circuits are largely designed using abstracted, text-based representations known as hardware description languages. FIRRTL (Flexible Intermediate Representation for Register-Transfer Level circuits) is an open-source project launched at UC Berkeley that aims to improve the state of the art in hardware design with an infrastructure for writing compilers that translate and modify these designs, using a standard format for representing the circuits output by hardware description languages.
Since its launch, FIRRTL has helped hardware designers become more productive by allowing them to reuse transformations as building blocks to help convert digital hardware designs into representations that are optimized for particular environments, such as simulation or fabrication of custom chips.
Based on FIRRTL's role as a tool for developing digital hardware, some of the visual motifs that might work well in the logo include wires and integrated circuit packages. Since it specifies an intermediate language that can be manipulated as a "tree" structure, tree motifs might also be interesting for the target audience (software/hardware engineers). Visuals that suggest the "fertile" homophone would also be interesting.

We like abstract tree concepts integrated with the logo. We also want a logo that is separable and can stand alone from the text. We'd maybe like to see this logo take the place of the "i" in FIRRTL, but please don't let that limit you.

There are three related projects from the same research group, all with logos found through 99Designs. I have attached logos for the Chisel hardware description language, which is a companion project to FIRRTL.
The Adept Lab and Berkeley Architecture Research are organizations sponsoring the projects. Visual/color consistency could be a plus.
