Universo Brasserie & Bar will be located in the Christchurch Art Gallery. The Christchurch Art Gallery is also know by its Maori (Indigenous people of New Zealand) Name, "Te Puna O Waiwhetu". The Māori elements of the name are explained as follows: Te Puna honours waipuna, the artesian spring beneath the gallery and Waiwhetu refers to one of the tributaries in the immediate vicinity, which flows into the River Avon. Waiwhetu may also be translated as ‘water in which stars are reflected’.
Bear in mind this is the name of the Gallery itself and Universo Brasserie and Bar is located within the Galleries facilities. However the restaurant will feature huge architectural curving glass walls (like water) and lights (like stars) so reference to the Maori name is made. We would not want the logo to look Maori however, more international.
Universo will function as an excellent modern brasserie will high-quality but simple dishes. Its trading day will range from casual coffees to a la carte dining, afterwork drinks and evening cocktails. It will cater to families including young children but the general feeling and design will be sophisticated.
Universo will be a high-profile location that attracts international visitors, host events and artists and offer an up-market environment to enjoy a drink in the evening.
The interior design will make us of the stunning glass walls (please google "The Christchurch Art Gallery") and modern contemporary bar design and furniture. Although not the same, an example of interior/menu style can be view at http://www.ostro.co.nz.
