As her remarkable story unfolds, Maria navigates the capacity to love and trust herself, the people around her, and loved ones, under the most extreme circumstances; rehabilitation, coming home, and adjusting to an environment that is as unfamiliar as it is familiar. The Girl in the Blue Helmet is more than a memoir—it reveals a need to consider experiences and relinquish fear to face the insurmountable challenges of life. By recounting memories of her life leading up to her diagnosis, she encourages us to listen and learn from our intuition during moments of great change. For Maria, she realised her tumour was not a ‘monster’ capable of ending her life.
